Sengai Gibon (1750-1837)


 A Zen priest of the Rinzai sect in the late Edo period. Born in Mugi County, Mino Province.
 He became a priest at Mino Seitai-ji Temple in 1760,
 and studied under Gessen Zenne at Musashi Touki-an in 1768.
 He then spent 23 years, from 1789 to 1811,
 as the 123rd abbot of Chikuzen Hakata Shofuku-ji Temple.
 After retiring, he painted many free-spirited and humorous paintings until his death at the age of 88,
 and devoted himself to a life of poetry, calligraphy and painting, leaving behind many paintings.t.
